This week's news report begins with quarterly figures from Samsung and Apple - and a discussion about what the future may hold for iOS.
We also talk about instant messaging versus SMS, the end of Best Buy's European joint venture with Carphone Warehouse, patent wars, white spaces and connected cars.
Carphone Warehouse is planning to take over the European business that bears its name, which is actually a 50/50 joint venture set up with US-based retailer Best Buy in June 2008. It’s agreed to pay £471 million for the 50% of CPW Europe it doesn’t already own.
This 50% share in Carphone Warehouse was originally sold for around £1.1 billion as part of Best Buy’s European expansion.
Carphone Warehouse Group plc has published an interim management statement for the third quarter of its financial year, covering the three months until the end of December 2012.
Its CPW Europe retail business - a 50% joint venture with Best Buy - saw like-for-like revenue up 7.8%, with UK like-for-like revenue up 16% from the same quarter in 2011.
The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a number of complaints against an online advertisement for UK virtual network Bemilo by The Carphone Warehouse.
Several statistical claims were made in the advertisement, which described Bemilo as “the UK’s safest mobile network designed to be used by children and managed by parents”.
