Dual-SIM smartphone and dual-boot tablet announced by ViewSonic

ViewSonic Europe has a double announcement today. It’s launching a dual-SIM Android smartphone and a dual-boot Android/Windows tablet. Both will be previewed next week at Mobile World Congress.

The ViewSonic V350 smartphone runs the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. As a ‘dual-SIM’ device it’s able to offer two connections on different networks at the same time. Specifications include a 3.5-inch HVGA capacitive touch screen, 5-megapixel autofocus camera, microSD memory expansion, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Yahoo! announces 'digital newsstand' for mobile phones and tablets

Online technology company Yahoo! has announced a ‘digital newsstand’ called Livestand from Yahoo!

It’s designed to work with tablets and mobile phones, offering information to consumers based on their interests. Initially it’ll use content from Yahoo!’s own news, sport, finance, entertainment and image services. Publishers

Sagem Wireless has become MobiWire

Sagem Wireless, which recently produced branded mobile devices including the Porsche Design mobile phone and the Puma phone, has become MobiWire. This change of name marks a new focus on the user experience and connected services within branded consumer electronics devices.

As part of the announcement, MobiWire has revealed Surface, its recently-patented Android user interface.

New strategy and new structure for Nokia after Microsoft announcement

Today, following plenty of rumour, Nokia has announced plans for a partnership with Microsoft that’ll see Windows Phone being used as Nokia’s main smartphone platform.

Symbian will become what the company describes as a “franchise platform”, with plans to almost double the current base of 200 million Symbian owners to around 350 million in the next few years. MeeGo is becoming an open-source mobile operating system project, although Nokia still plans to ship a MeeGo-related product this year.

A quarter of smartphones sold in Europe are running Android

Market research company GfK Retail and Technology says Android’s share of European smartphone sales quadrupled in 2010.

At the start of the year Android accounted for 5% of total European sales; by the end of the year it was in over 25% of all smartphones sold.
