US aims to improve accessibility of smartphones through new law

The Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act has passed both chambers of Congress in the USA and is expected to be signed by President Obama. In general terms, the new law would requires telecommunications equipment to be usable by individuals with disabilities unless it's too difficult or too expensive to arrange this.

Texting bans appear to increase the risk of driving accidents

A study published this week by researchers at the Highway Loss Data Institute in the USA has found that laws banning texting while driving aren't reducing the number of accidents. Instead, there appears to be a slight increase in the number of collisions.

UK mobile broadband speeds aren't getting much better

A report from comparison website Broadband Genie says average mobile broadband speeds have increased very little in the last 12 months.

The company says Three, Vodafone and Virgin Media all advertise speeds of 'up to' 7.2Mbps, although average speeds are much lower. The highest average speeds came from T-Mobile and Vodafone, averaging around 1.2Mb.

UK mobile video viewing is up 75% on last year

Marketing intelligence company comScore says 2.7 million people in the UK now watch video on mobile devices, up 75% from July last year. Overall, in all five European countries measured - the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy – the total number of people watching video on mobile devices has increased by 66% in the past year to 12.1 million consumers.

University of Leeds issues medical students with iPhones

The University of Leeds is loaning smartphones to all its fourth and fifth year medical students, enabling them to access files and assessments when they're off-campus. It's believed to be the first time a UK medical school has provided undergraduates with this level of mobile phone technology.
