America's first 4G mobile phone breaks sales records

US mobile operator Sprint says the HTC EVO 4G broke sales records when it went on sale last Friday, although it's not quoted any specific figures. It says Friday sales of the HTC EVO 4G, which includes 3G and 4G technology along with a 4.3-inch screen and 8 megapixel camera, were the largest quantity of a single phone model sold in one day ever for Sprint. Not only did it sell more on its first day than the previous record-holders  - the Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre – it managed to sell three times the combined number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market.

Kevin Packingham, senior vice president of Product Development for Sprint, said "HTC EVO 4G has more than lived up to our expectations that it would be one of the most anticipated technology products of the year. We are working closely with our partners at HTC to increase the supply and get EVO 4G into the hands of everyone who wants one as quickly as possible."

Sprint has subsequently said the "three times over three days" figure isn't right: bit.ly/coFdJv
