Charles Dunstone, chairman and co-founder of the Carphone Warehouse Group plc, has been awarded a knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List “for services to the Mobile Communications Industry and to charity”. Dr Michael Short, president of the Institution of Engineering & Technology and vice president at Telefónica Europe, is to receive a CBE.

The Carphone Warehouse was founded in 1989 with Charles Dunstone as CEO. When the company restructured in 2010, splitting the Carphone Warehouse retail business from its TalkTalk telecom business, Mr Dunstone became chairman.

Mike Short was appointed as a director of mobile network Cellnet in 1989, staying with the company as it became O2 and then Telefonica. He’s also served as chairman of the GSM Association, chair of the UK Mobile Data Association and as a member of the UK Home Office Internet Task Force.
