Mobile termination rates are hitting the headlines – first the EC, then Ofcom… and now BT and 3 are weighing in with their Terminate the Rate campaign. They’re calling for a cut in inter-network charges, which are much higher for mobile calls than they are for fixed-line calls. Cynics might suggest that BT is concerned because mobile networks are making more profit from calls than it does – and 3 isn’t making as much money from mobile termination rates as it did a few years ago – but nevertheless it’s likely to be good news for consumers. In fact, the EC has already said it expects termination rates to fall – so perhaps there’s also some showboating going on.
