Independent mobile app store sees 500% annual increase in downloads

Independent application store Mobango says it's experienced a 500% increase in downloads in the last 12 months, reaching 23 million downloads in December 2009. Unlike other app stores, Mobango has a 'social' element to its download policy and encourages users to distribute downloaded apps to their friends.

Mobango's app store was launched less than two years ago and now has over 20,000 mobile applications that work on Symbian, Android, Flash Lite, Palm, Java, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile platforms.

Fabio Pezzotti, CEO of Mobango, said "Mobango prides itself on hard work, innovation and loyalty to its global community. Facilitating a reliable, cost-effective and fast way for mobile app providers to distribute content to millions of cross-platform mobile users globally remains at the heart of our work."

However, although the company is claiming to be the fastest-growing independent application store in the world, it has a long way to go in terms of overall size. Leading independent app store GetJar is estimated to have 50,000 applications and 50 million downloads per month, while the Apple App Store currently has over 100,000 apps.
