Train operator ScotRail is the latest rail company to launch a mobile phone app. It says this is currently the only UK app that provides real-time train information for the UK and ticket purchasing for UK rail routes without any additional charge.
The ScotRail app has been developed by mobile ticketing company Masabi and is available free for a wide variety of devices including iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.
Graeme Macfarlan, marketing manager at First ScotRail, said “It’s like having a live departure board and a ticket office in your pocket offering instant access to travel information at any time - even when you’re on the move. You can stay informed no matter your location. For example you can check if a train is on time before leaving home or work - direct from your mobile. It even tells you the platform numbers.”
Tickets bought via the app are available to collect within ten minutes of booking from any station with a booking office or ticket vending machine.
The app is available from the ScotRail mobile web site, in application stores or via text message.
We’ve previously spoken to Masabi CEO Ben Whitaker on a couple of occasions, most recently in June last year. You can listen to the interview on our website, via iTunes or by downloading the MP3 file.
