Ofcom liberalises 2G and 3G mobile frequencies for 4G service in the UK

Telecoms regulator Ofcom says it’ll allow all UK mobile network operators to use 4G technology on their 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz frequency bands previously set aside for 2G and 3G service.

It’s also permitting an increase in the maximum 900MHz base station transmit power for 3G and 4G technology.

The decision follows a proposal earlier this year - and the regulator’s decision last year to allow EE to build its 4G network using frequencies previously set aside for 2G and 3G mobile phones.

In addition, 2G and 3G licences are being updated to align their terms and conditions more closely with the recently-awarded 800MHz and 2.6GHz 4G licences.
