Over one billion people will have used their mobile devices for banking by the end of 2017, according to a new Juniper Research report. That’s more than 15% of the global subscriber base - and is a substantial increase from this year’s expected total of just over 590 million mobile banking users.
The report notes that most banks have at least one mobile banking offering via SMS messaging, a mobile web browser or a mobile application.
Nitin Bhas, the report’s author and a senior analyst with Juniper Research, said “From the banks’ perspective the triple play platform is advantageous as it avoids them having to switch suppliers for different approaches as well as maximising client reach. While messaging remains highly popular and relevant in the financial sector, apps will be the dominant access mode in developed markets with banks reporting an increased number of visits per month on their mobile apps.”
China & the Far East, North America and Western Europe are expected to have the highest penetration of mobile banking users in 2017.
