The fixed penalty for using a hand-held mobile phone when driving in the UK has increased from £60 to £100 today. As before, there’ll also be three points added to the driver’s licence.
This follows a consultation in June last year and a government announcement about the changes two months ago.
In addition, the police have been given the new ability to issue on-the-spot £100 fixed penalty notices for careless driving.
Most fixed penalties have increased today, covering offences such as such as speeding, not wearing a seat belt and vehicle defects:
- a non-endorsable £30 fixed penalty notice is rising to £50
- an endorsable and non-endorsable £60 fixed penalty notice is rising to £100
- an endorsable £120 fixed penalty notice is rising to £200
- the £200 fixed penalty for driving with no insurance is rising to £300
