Samsung reveals new Galaxy S4 smartphone

Last night Samsung announced its new flagship Android smartphone: the Samsung Galaxy S4. The company introduced the product range with the launch of its original Galaxy S smartphone in June 2010, followed two years later by the SII and more recently the SIII.

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 is a 4G-enabled Android smartphone with a 5-inch Super AMOLED HD screen and a 13 megapixel camera. It’ll either run a 1.9GHz quad-core processor or a 1.6 GHz eight-core processor depending on the country in which it’s being sold. The casing is just 7.9mm deep and weighs 130g, while the display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3.

JK Shin, President and head of the IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung, said “With the GALAXY S 4, Samsung is again going to enhance the way we live. All the innovative features of GALAXY S 4 were developed based on the insights and needs we found from our consumers all around the world. Following the successful GALAXY S series, this phone is yet another great proof point of people-inspired innovation. At Samsung we’ll never stop pursuing innovation conceived by people, so we can inspire them in return.”

Features include:

  • a ‘dual camera’ mode that lets users make video calls and capture images using both front and rear cameras.
  • face and motion sensors to scroll through web pages without touching the screen and to pause video when the user looks away
  • an optical reader (OCR) to recognise and respond to text from business cards

Availability is expected from Q2 2013. A date of 26th April 2013 has been confirmed for the UK.

Samsung also previewed the Samsung Hub: a multimedia content store that offers access to the Samsung WatchON video service, text and voice messaging service Samsung ChatON, a Group Play sharing feature and the updated Samsung Apps service.
