Skype reveals new CEO and an Android app

Internet communications company Skype has appointed Tony Bates, Senior Vice President of Cisco, as the company's new Chief Executive Officer. Mr Bates, who'll join Skype at the end of this month, is General Manager of Cisco’s Enterprise, Commercial and Small Business Division. He's also served on the boards of a range of technology companies including YouTube and LoveFilm. Josh Silverman, the outgoing CEO, joined Skype from eBay's Shopping.com business in early 2008.

Miles Flint, chairman of Skype's Board of Directors, said "We are thrilled to bring on Tony Bates as Skype’s new CEO. His record of achievement and significant operational and management expertise, cultivated over a distinguished tenure at one of the world’s preeminent technology companies, presents a unique opportunity for Skype that we are enthusiastic to embrace."

In addition, Skype has confirmed it's now available on a wide range of Android devices. The new Skype Android app runs on most smartphones with Android v2.1 or higher; previously only US customers on the Verizon Wireless network were able to use Skype on Android phones.
