In five years’ time, smart metering will account for over 40% of the 400 million machine-to-machine connections around the world. That’s the prediction of a new Juniper Research report. Although M2M smart meters don’t make as much money per connection as other M2M segments, Juniper says the volume of smart meter deployment will means it’s still an important revenue stream.
Anthony Cox, Associate Analyst at Juniper Research, said “High device numbers in the smart metering area of the M2M market will mean that smart metering will remain an important corner stone of the M2M industry. Automotive telematics and embedded consumer electronics devices are also gaining momentum so the revenue prospects of M2M as a whole are improving.”
The report also predicts that annual revenues from M2M services will exceed $35 billion by 2016, with developed markets - particularly the USA - leading M2M deployment and awareness.
