70% of electricity customers in Europe expected to have smart meters by 2022

Figures from wireless analyst firm Berg Insight show that 70% of electricity customers in Europe are expected to have smart meters by 2022.

The current figure for smart meter penetration in Europe is 24%; that’s the equivalent of 67.9 million smart electricity meters, most of which are in Italy, Spain and the Nordic countries.

UK smart meter contracts confirmed by Department of Energy & Climate Change

The UK government’s Department of Energy & Climate Change has announced details of the companies that’ll be responsible for the country’s rollout of ‘smart’ gas and electricity meters.

53 million smart meters in homes and small businesses will be connected to the business systems of energy suppliers, network operators and energy service companies, enabling consumers to benefit from accurate bills and new tariffs without the need for meter reading visits.

Telefonica UK and Arqiva are chosen to provide smart meter communications for the UK

Telefónica UK has been chosen as one of the preferred communications service providers for the UK’s smart meter roll-out. Subject to contract, it’ll provide communications services across the Centre and South regions in a deal worth £1.5 billion over 15 years.

The provider for the North region is infrastructure company Arqiva, with a deal worth £625 million over 15 years.
