Sony creates WiFi-enabled camera lenses for smartphones

Sony has announced two smartphone accessories that look like camera lenses. Each is actually a separate camera that’ll link to compatible Android and iOS smartphones via WiFi and Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile application. There are even smartphone mounting kits for some handsets, although the ‘lens’ can also be used at a distance from the phone.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-QX100 and DSC-QX10 cameras use the smartphone’s screen as a viewfinder, enabling users to adjust settings before taking pictures or beginning HD video recording.

One of the lenses has an 18.2 megapixel sensor, a 10x optical zoom range and image stabilisation, while the other has a larger image sensor with 20.2 megapixels, image stabilisation and a 3.6x optical zoom.

Both will go on sale from 20th September. Pricing via sony.co.uk is from £179.
