Sony Ericsson reveals quarterly results - and its ambition to dominate Android sales

Sony Ericsson has announced its third quarter financial results today, revealing its third consecutive quarter of profits.

Net quarterly income was €49 million, up €37 million from the previous quarter and up €213 million on Q3 2009 (when Sony Ericsson made a €164 million loss). The number of units shipped was down to 10.4 million, a drop of 5% from the previous quarter and 26% down year-on-year. However the average selling price remained relatively high at €154, which meant sales for the quarter were €1.6 billion – fractionally down on the Q3 2009 figure and down 9% on the previous quarter.

Bert Nordberg, President & CEO of Sony Ericsson, said "Our third consecutive quarter of profitable results illustrates that Sony Ericsson’s overall performance is stabilising. Our strategy to focus on the smartphone segment is succeeding and smartphones now comprise more than 50% of our total sales. During the quarter, we launched our Android-based Xperia models in new markets, such as China and the US, and it is our ambition to become the global number one handset provider on the Android platform."
