Dual-core Android smartphone coming to the UK from Motorola and Orange

Motorola Mobility and Orange UK have announced the Motorola ATRIX, described as “the world’s most powerful smartphone” with a dual-core 1GHz processor – effectively 2GHz of processing power – and 1GB of RAM plus 16GB of expandable storage. It’ll have a full Mozilla Firefox 3.6 browser (with Adobe Flash Player) on a 4-inch qHD (960 x 540) display and will run Android 2.2.

What’s particularly notable is that the ATRIX is designed to transform into a laptop-style device or a multimedia hub with a choice of two docks.

The Motorola Laptop Dock has an 11.6-inch screen, a separate battery for up to eight hours of battery life, full keyboard and stereo speakers. Alternatively, the Motorola HD Multimedia Dock has three USB ports and an HDMI port for connecting to a monitor or TV.

Andrew Morley, vice president of marketing for the EMARA region of Motorola Mobility, said “We want to empower individuals, giving them new ways to stay connected, informed and entertained at home, on the job and anywhere in between. We are finding that consumers are increasingly using smartphones as their primary digital screens. Motorola ATRIX ushers in a new era in mobile computing and has the power to deliver on its promise to empower individuals as it comes loaded with the Motorola webtop application, which enables consumers to enhance the capabilities of their smartphones and simultaneously reduce their need for additional mobile computing screens.”

Motorola ATRIX is expected to arrive on the Orange UK network in Q2 2011.
