Motorola Mobility has agreed to acquire 4Home, a company that develops ‘connected home’ software for consumers. The deal is expected to be completed later this month.

The number of mobile machine-to-machine connections is expected to exceed last year's forecast, according to ABI Research. It it's raised its prediction of about 225 million connections worldwide by 2014 to 232.5 million, with over 297 million M2M connections anticipated in 2015.

Research company Berg Insight says the number of smart electricity meters installed around the world will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 31.1% to reach 302.5 million in 2015. Penetration rates for smart meters are expected to increase from today's 15–20% in Europe and North America to nearly 50%. It says many markets will approach 100% penetration by 2020.
