Telefonica culls its TU Me free call and messaging service after a year

Telefónica has announced that it’s closing the TU Me voice-over-IP service next month. TU Me, which offers free voice calls as well as messaging and photo sharing, was originally launched in May last year. It’s currently available as an Apple iOS, Google Android and BlackBerry application.

The decision doesn’t affect the TU Go VoIP service, which lets O2 customers make and receive calls using the same number on more than one device.

A statement on the TU website currently says “Hi, we’re sorry to say that TU Me is being discontinued. During the next month we’ll be phasing out our support for TU Me, which means that after Sunday September 8th it will be inoperable. For your safety and security, all of your messages, photos and data will be permanently deleted from our servers and the app will not be available for download via the App Store, the Google Play Store, and the BlackBerry App World.”
