The average US teen sends or receives six text messages every hour

The average teenager in the USA is sending or receiving 3,339 text message per month, according to new research from The Nielsen Company. That’s more than six SMS texts every hour they’re awake – and shows an increase of 8% from last year.

Teenage females send & receive the highest volume of texts out of all US mobile consumers. They send and receive an average of 4,050 texts per month, with teen males sending and receiving an average of 2,539 monthly texts. Young adults aged 18-24 exchange just 1,630 texts per month; half the number of teenage texters.

Text messaging remains the top reason for teenagers to choose a mobile phone, as it was last year. 43% of US teenagers say it's their main reason for getting a mobile.
