Yahoo! introduces free SMS and instant messaging app in USA

Yahoo! has added a new mobile communications product to its portfolio. It’s called Hub and is available as a beta Android app to users with a US-based SIM card. Plans for availability outside the USA haven’t been confirmed.

Many of the features are similar to other unified messaging apps, such as Apple’s iMessage, although Hub can also send text messages to people who don’t have the app. Conversations are shown as a ‘thread’, whether private conversations or group messages.

There are no text messaging fees; messages are sent via WiFi or mobile data to users in the USA, Canada, Indonesia, India, Kuwait, Malaysia, Philippines, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam.

US-based users can download Yahoo! Hub from the Android Marketplace.
