A survey conducted amongst 250 senior executives in the United States on behalf of mobile security company Cellcrypt has shown that the security of mobile phone calls is already being addressed in some form by most of the companies surveyed – although the measures may not be effective.

Three-quarters of organisations had a security policy covering mobile phone calling. However, although 55% of respondents in IT roles thought their business had implemented mobile voice call encryption solutions, only 18% of organisations had actually done so.

Only a quarter of businesses said they didn't discuss any sensitive or confidential information via mobile phones. Of those that did, 51% discussed sensitive or confidential information over mobile phones every day, rising to 79% of organisations at least once a week.

Cellcrypt points out that the encryption of GSM mobile calls is threatened by the potential publication of a code table in the next six months – maybe even within a few weeks. This would make it possible to intercept mobile phone calls using little more than a high-spec laptop. [Press release]
