Ofcom says UK could have 4G mobile services this year

Ofcom says Everything Everywhere’s proposal to use its existing 1800MHz GSM spectrum to deliver 4G services in the UK is likely to benefit consumers without causing competition to become distorted. As a result, it’s proposing to give the go-ahead to Everything Everywhere after a four week consultation period.

The regulator says the 4G plans are likely to result in faster mobile broadband speeds and potentially wider mobile broadband coverage in rural areas.

UK networks are already allowed to use their 2G frequencies to deliver 3G services; this new ruling would allow 4G services to run on the 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum.
