GSMA works with Wireless Broadband Alliance to simplify WiFi hotspot connections

The GSMA and the Wireless Broadband Alliance are working together to make it easier for mobile devices to connect to WiFi hotspots. Both organisations are developing technical and commercial frameworks for ‘WiFi roaming’, which should result in a simpler consumer experience.

There is currently no consistency in the way mobile devices connect to WiFi networks. The GSMA and WBA’s plans for ‘Wi-Fi roaming’ will allow mobile devices to use the SIM card for authentication, providing a seamless connection and enabling network operators to securely identify users. It’ll build on the WBA’s Next Generation Hotspot programme and the Wi-Fi Alliance’s Passpoint certification.

Shrikant Shenwai, CEO of the WBA, said “The combination of Wi-Fi and mobile technologies extends the power of broadband for consumers. The work by the WBA and the GSMA will expedite the availability of a new generation of Internet access for the benefit of consumers everywhere. Key to this is Wi-Fi being able to replicate the success of mobile technology and allow users to roam seamlessly between different networks.”

That’s great but using and hosting a Wi-Fi hotspot can threaten security and compromise personal documents, privacy and identity. Many Wi-Fi hotspot users don’t understand the issues related to using public wireless networks.
