ExclusiveGeography meets Social Media on 'Geosocial' sites

Ted Landphair of voanews.com writes:

There’s a well-worn phrase in real estate: “location, location, location,” meaning that where a property is located, alone, means more than anything else when it comes to assessing its value.

But ‘location’ is getting new meanings in these days of smartphones and other hand-held devices.

ExclusiveThis week at The Fonecast: 11th September 2011

Mark Bridge writes:

Welcome to this week's news summary from The Fonecast. Sorry it's late but I have a reasonably good excuse. On Friday I was in central London to meet Hans Eriksson of Bambuser. He was about to stream his life online for 24 hours, relying on social networking to find him off-beat attractions. You'll find our conversation on TheFonecast.com – and the results are at bambuserchallenge.tumblr.com

ExclusiveLooxcie 2 wearable video camera review

Mark Bridge writes:

Every so often I see a piece of mobile technology that I really want to get my hands on. Most recently, that’s been the Looxcie 2 – which is probably best described as a wearable camcorder.

Now, that in itself is nothing new – it’s possible to buy a set of sunglasses with a built-in mini video camera or even a small digital camera that fits to your cycle helmet – but this has two distinct tricks up its sleeve.

UK telecoms regulator Ofcom wants to ban inflation-related rises in telecoms contracts. Instead, it says any potential mid-contract price rises should be set out in pounds and pence.

Many phone, broadband and pay TV companies currently increase their customers’ tariffs in line with a percentage formula linked to inflation. For example, a company might tell customers it will increase their monthly bill every April by the Retail Price Index.

However, as the rate of inflation and the RPI will vary from year to year, Ofcom says customers are required to commit to a contract without being certain about the prices they will pay.

As a result, Ofcom wants potential price rises during a contract to be defined in terms of specific amounts rather than percentages.

Its proposed new rule would require any prices and price rises in a customer’s contract to be set out in pounds and pence, prominently and transparently, at the point of sale. This would prevent providers from including inflation-linked or percentage-based price rise terms in new contracts.

Ofcom’s consultation is open until 13th February 2024, with a final decision expected in spring 2024.
