Samsung Electronics has announced a new smartphone called the Samsung Galaxy K zoom.

It’s an Android device with a 10x optical zoom lens and a 20.7 megapixel sensor, along with optical image stabilisation and full HD video recording. As well as offering advanced camera controls there’s also a ‘Selfie Alarm’ feature that will automatically take a photo when your face appears on-screen in a predetermined place.

Smartphone specs include a 4.8 inch HD Super AMOLED display (1280 x 720 pixel). Although the camera lens retracts, the device is still 20.2mm deep at its widest point and weighs 200g. There’s a ‘hexa core’ processor - effectively 1.3GHz quad-core plus 1.7GHz dual-core - running Android v4.4.

Sun Hong Lim, Senior Vice President of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, said “With the introduction of the Galaxy K zoom, Samsung continues to demonstrate our commitment to creating products that meet the diverse demands of our consumers. The new Galaxy K zoom empowers users to effortlessly capture and share their most important everyday moments in stunning clarity, with the convenience and connectedness of a Galaxy smartphone, for a unique, all-in-one mobile experience.”

The Galaxy K zoom appears to be a successor to last year’s Galaxy S4 zoom, which had a noticeably different feature set to the similarly-named flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone. UK availability hasn’t been confirmed but is expected in the next few weeks.
