Acer has broadened its smartphone range by introducing a new Windows Phone 8.1 device.

The Liquid M220 - with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 4-inch display and 5 megapixel camera - was revealed alongside two new Android handsets; the Z220 (using the same basic spec as the M220) and the Z520 (quad-core 1.3GHz chip, 5-inch display, 8 megapixel camera).

Thanks to its relatively low spec, the Liquid M220 is expected to sell SIM-free for around £69.

At the other end of the scale is Acer’s 4G-ready Android-powered Liquid Jade Z, with a 5-inch screen, quad-core 1.5GHz processor and 13 megapixel camera.

ST Liew, President of Acer’s Smartphone Business Group, said “We are proudly introducing our first Windows Phone 8.1 and simultaneously announcing its future upgradability to Windows Phone 10. It is the right moment for Acer to join the Windows Phone eco-system with its growing popularity and consistency across phone and PC devices. With the addition of a Windows-based smartphone, Acer now offers the broadest Windows portfolio in the industry.”

There’s also a new wearable fitness device from Acer. Called the Liquid Leap+, it’s an updated version of last year’s Liquid Leap. This sport band has a 1-inch OLED touchscreen and is compatible with Windows, Android and iOS.
