Quarterly revenue was up 72% year-on-year to $2.5 billion (£1.49 billion), with net income up to $642 million (£382 million).

Most of this revenue - $2.27 billion - came from advertising, with 59% of all advertising revenue resulting from mobile ads. That’s up from around 30% a year ago.

The number of monthly active users (MAUs) was up 15% year-on-year to 1.28 billion, with mobile MAUs up 34% to 1.01 billion.

Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder and CEO of Facebook, said “Facebook’s business is strong and growing, and this quarter was a great start to 2014. We’ve made some long term bets on the future while staying focused on executing and improving our core products and business. We’re in great position to continue making progress towards our mission.”

In a separate announcement, WhatsApp - the messaging business that’s due to be acquired by Facebook - said it now has half a billion regular users.
