Samsung Electronics has announced the Galaxy Tab S, which is described as the company’s thinnest and lightest tablet so far. There’ll be two screen sizes - 10.5-inch and 8.4-inch versions - and a choice of WiFi-only or WiFi + 4G connectivity. The tablets are just 6.6mm deep and weigh from 294g (for the 8.4-inch WiFi-only model).

There’s a 2560 x 1600 pixel Super AMOLED display (the iPad Air offers 2048 x 1536 on its 9.7-inch screen) and an ‘octa-core’ CPU running Android v4.4. Availability is expected from July.

JK Shin, CEO and President of the IT & Mobile Division at Samsung Electronics, said “The tablet is becoming a popular personal viewing device for enjoying content, which makes the quality of the display a critical feature. With the launch of the Galaxy Tab S, Samsung is setting the industry bar higher for the entire mobile industry. It will provide consumers with a visual and entertainment experience that brings colours to life, beautifully packaged in a sleek and ultra-portable mobile device.”

In addition, Samsung has announced a new partnership with Marvel Entertainment. Samsung products are expected to appear in Marvel feature films, while Marvel content will be offered on Samsung devices - starting with the new Tab S, which will come with three free months of subscription services for the Marvel Unlimited digital comic library.
