Last year AT&T, T‑Mobile and Verizon rolled out a mobile payment service across the USA. The service, which is called Isis, was originally announced in 2010 and is currently available on a number of Android and iOS devices.

However, recent international news headlines have used the acronym ISIS to refer to a group of fighters in Syria and Iraq.

In a statement, Michael Abbott – CEO of the payment service – said “We have no interest in sharing a name with a group whose name has become synonymous with violence and our hearts go out to those who are suffering. As a company, we have made the decision to rebrand. We know this is the right decision – for our company, our partners and our customers.”

A further announcement is expected within the next few months.
