As one show closes, so another show opens.

It’s now more than a week since we bid a sad farewell to Mobile World Congress 2014 – I imagine hotel rooms for 2nd to 5th March 2015 are already being booked – but there’s now CeBIT in Germany to look forward to. Prime Minister David Cameron kicked things off last night with a speech that talked about UK-German partnerships, more funding for research around the ‘Internet of Things’ and the development of 5G technology.

Meanwhile the Geneva International Motor Show has been and gone, bringing us Vodafone’s robust embedded SIMs and Apple’s CarPlay integration plans.

Talking of Apple, its Chief Financial Officer is retiring this year. Peter Oppenheimer, who’s been a big part of the company’s transformation in the past decade, is handing over to Luca Maestri, who’s currently Apple’s VP of Finance and corporate controller.

Although there’s not been a great deal of mobile-related news in the gap between MWC and CeBIT, HTC and LG still managed to announce some new devices. Both are lower-spec smartphones with features borrowed from their high-spec siblings. LG’s L90 can be unlocked by tapping in the screen, while HTC’s Desire 310 can create video complations like the HTC One.

Finally, if you’ve not caught up with our special reports from Barcelona, now’s the time to check them out. You’ll find conversations about 4G coverage, future technology, voice controlled mobile shopping and SMS versus OTT messaging on our website... and there’s plenty more still to come.

On Monday mornings we summarise the past week’s mobile industry headlines in an email newsletter that’s very much like this article.
