Sony Mobile has announced a number of new products at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin. There are three new Android-powered Xperia smartphones, a new splash-proof Android tablet and a hybrid slate/laptop VAIO PC running Windows 8. The company also noted that its Android tablets would be branded as ‘Xperia’ in the future.

Kazuo Hirai, Sony Corporation’s recently-appointed President and CEO, said “This is an extraordinary company going through extraordinary times. It forces us to confront difficult realities and make hard business decisions. We must look at ourselves honestly and hold true to the values and purpose of Sony. I am determined to do this with a laser-like focus, speed and execution. The products I unveil today will show Sony’s long-standing ambition to deliver what customers value... a simpler, easier, more entertaining and user-friendly experience.”

The three new Android smartphones are the flagship Xperia T, the Xperia V and the Xperia J. Sony’s Xperia T has a 4.6-inch display and a 13 megapixel camera, while the 4G Xperia V stands out by being water resistant. Skyfall, the new James Bond film, will feature the Sony Xperia T.

When it comes to tablets, the new Xperia Tablet S will run Android on an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, with the new VAIO Duo 11 making the most of Windows 8 by sliding between touch-screen slate mode and keyboard mode.

All these devices are expected to hit the shops in the next few months.

ExclusiveDesigning mobile phones for seniors: we talk to Doro and Emporia Telecom

Producing mobile phones for older customers requires much more than big buttons and a simple interface. At Mobile World Congress last month we spoke to two major players in this growing sector: Swedish company Doro and Austria's Emporia Telecom.

Our first conversation was with Harald Obereder, Chief Technology Officer at Emporia, who spoke to Mark Bridge about handset design and user interface design.
