EE says it’s connected more than one million 4G customers in the UK, four months ahead of its end-of-year target.

The company launched its 4G UK service on 30th October 2012 and currently provides service to more than 100 towns and cities.

Microsoft's CEO announces his retirement, then Vodafone sells its US operation for $130 billion... and now Nokia's mobile phone business is being bought. Alongside these reports there's also time to talk about 4G in the UK, children with mobiles, roaming charges and the future of smartphones.

Aerospace technology company Selex ES has confirmed that it upgraded air traffic management radar in London and the south of England ahead of last week’s 2.6GHz 4G launches by Vodafone and O2.

Selex ES is responsible for a project that’ll see it upgrading more than half of the UK’s air traffic management S-band radar systems to avoid potential disruption from 4G mobile networks.

Last week was a good one for 4G in the UK. Not only did Vodafone and O2 launch their 4G networks… and not only did EE pass the milestone of 100 towns and cities with 4G coverage… but Three UK confirmed its plans for a 4G launch.

In a blog post, Three said it’ll begin its 4G rollout in December 2013.

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.
