Research published by Goode Intelligence suggests that 40% of organisations are planning to encrypt data on employees’ mobile phones from September 2010 onwards. The figure comes from the company's Mobile Security Survey, carried out in partnership with Acumin Consulting.

The survey also revealed that nearly 43% of organisations felt the threat from mobile phone data loss was currently low, although the perceived threat is increasing – just 29% of respondents said the risk would still be low in 2011, while 29% forecast that the risk would be 'medium' and 28% felt the risk would be 'high' or 'very high'.

Criminals are using the FIFA World Cup as an opportunity to trick mobile phone users into providing their bank details in exchange for non-existent prizes. The scam has the same basis as many spam email messages – "you've won a prize, give us your bank details for payment" – but it's being sent as an SMS text message. Recent incidents have been reported in Australia, although the problem could easily be international. FIFA has already warned football fans to be aware of email scams and internet hoaxes.

Last week I spotted a couple of mobile-related news stories that involved payment company MasterCard. One came from CPI Card Group, which had introduced a “next-generation, MasterCard-approved payment tag” (a.k.a. 'sticker') that enabled “any mobile device to be used to make payments anywhere using the worldwide contactless MasterCard PayPass standard” (by sticking it on the back).

Security technology company McAfee has agreed to acquire Trust Digital, which provides software that helps businesses secure and manage their mobile phones. It's a move that will help McAfee – best known for its anti-virus software – to move further into the mobile space.

Dave DeWalt, McAfee President and CEO, said "The acquisition of Trust Digital’s industry-leading enterprise mobility management solutions will extend the current McAfee security portfolio beyond the traditional endpoint, addressing the rapidly expanding mobile security market.

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.
