The programme also covers Nokia's new Facebook-friendly phone, plans for white space technology in the UK, shopping on smartphones, Samsung's Chinese suppliers, the demand for mobile data and a new app from Orange that seems to threaten its mobile business.

Business advisory firm Deloitte LLP has calculated that around £3.5 billion of Christmas spending in the UK will either be bought on or influenced by smartphones.

It says consumers who use their mobile devices to research prices, store their shopping lists and take their shopping conversations onto social media will account for £3.2 billion of this total, with £330 million of sales being made directly on smartphones.

To find out more, I spoke to Henry Lawson, co-founder and CEO of nFluence, and started by asking him to explain exactly what nFluence did.

We start this week's programme by talking about the iPhone 5 and iOS6 before moving on to HTC's forthcoming Windows Phone 8 devices.

There's also some mobile payment news, online shopping research, a health study, data about tablet manufacturing and machine-to-machine connection figures.

A new study suggests that online impulse purchases in the UK may have increased by £1.1 billion a year as a result of the shopping convenience offered by smartphones and tablet computers.

The figures from Rackspace Hosting indicate that 48% of UK adults who use smartphones or tablets for online shopping admit they’re buying things on impulse more frequently by using their handheld devices, resulting in an average £329 extra spent per person per year.

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.
