We begin this week's podcast with updates on two topics we discussed last week: the potential purchase of a UK mobile network by BT - and the crowd-funded Jolla Tablet.

After that we talk about the GSMA's reaction to national roaming, the potential death of the landline, a new threat to Google, management changes and advertising for 4G data.

The GSMA has published a response to the UK government’s suggestion that ‘national roaming’ could be mandated to reduce areas of poor mobile phone coverage.

A consultation period was launched on 5th November and ended yesterday.

The GSMA has launched a Code of Conduct for Mobile Money Providers.

It includes common business principles that are designed to enable the development of safe and responsible digital financial services.

A new report by the GSMA forecasts that half of the world’s population will be using mobile devices to access the internet by 2020.

Almost all of the additional mobile internet users expected during the next six years will come from developing markets, according to the report.

The GSMA says several major mobile network operators and SIM manufacturers have launched solutions that comply with its Embedded SIM specification for remote ‘over the air’ provisioning of machine-to-machine (M2M) devices.

Unlike conventional SIM cards, these embedded cards can be reprogrammed remotely to work with different network operators.

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.
