Doro to launch its 'Connect & Care' mobile social networking service this summer

Doro, the Swedish company that produces ‘easy to use’ mobile phones for older consumers, has announced plans to launch a mobile-based DIY care service this summer. Doro Connect & Care will combine social networking with a network of volunteers, ensuring that elderly people can receive assistance even if their friends or family aren’t available.

The service isn’t just for emergency use but is also designed to help when family members need a hand with domestic tasks, such as closing a window or moving a heavy object.

When the service is launched it’ll be offered on compatible Doro mobile phones. A companion app on Android and iOS smartphones will let trusted family members and friends keep an eye on the user’s behaviour, alerting them if their routine changes dramatically.

Details of the volunteer network and the subscription charges will be revealed in the next few months.

Chris Millington, Managing Director of Doro UK, said “We are currently working with our renowned partner organisations on this exciting project – specifically in terms of delivering the volunteer element. We have found that 44% of people are willing to give some of their time to help others living within their local community. This service will help to bring families and their neighbours together in a more meaningful way. Our intelligent and innovative use of mobile technology will once again take huge steps toward bridging the digital divide between the generations.”

In addition, Doro has used Mobile World Congress 2015 to reveal voice-enabled versions of its two newest smartphones, created in partnership with specialist smartphone producer Claria (formerly Telorion). They’ll be called the Doro 820 Claria and Doro 820 Mini Claria.

We spoke to Chris Millington of Doro in our Mobile World Congress 2015 podcast. You can listen to the conversation via the built-in audio player on our website or by downloading the MP3 file.

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
