Telefonica Europe says revenue is up this year

Telefonica Europe - the parent company of O2 UK - has released financial results for the first half of 2011. It now has 57.3 million customers across its European operations, a 5% increase from last year - and it says revenue was up 2.2% year-on-year to 7.7 million Euro (£6.7 million), which is a 3.2% increase if the effect of mobile termination rate cuts are excluded.

Matthew Key, Chairman and Chief Executive of Telefónica Europe, said “We trailblazed a number of new innovations across our markets in the second quarter. In the UK we continued to drive transformational change in the market with the formation of a new joint venture with other mobile operators to accelerate services in the m-commerce sector and the deployment of nationwide WiFi. At the same time, we are focusing on initiatives that enhance the experience of our customers by providing them with additional value,m such as the recent launch of Priority Moments - a UK first in location-based advertising and loyalty services, the introduction of the O2 Money card in Ireland and the rollout of O2 Gurus across Europe.”

In the UK, the company’s customer base (excluding 2.7 million people on the Tesco Mobile MVNO) was 22.1 million users, a year-on-year increase of 2%. The customer base is now 48% contract, 52% prepay. Over 82% of new connections were smartphones, pushing overall smartphone penetration to 35%.

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
