came a sudden burst of news-related activity.

There’s a new low-price Android tablet in town. The Datawind UbiSlate 7Ci, which is being described as the world’s cheapest tablet, is a consumer version of the Aakash-2 device designed for schools and universities in India.

It runs a version of Android v4.0.3 on a 1GHz chip and has a 7-inch 800 x 400 pixel display.

James Rosewell and Mark Bridge report from Mobile World Congress 2012. In today's programme they talk about Wednesday's events - including the beta release of Windows 8 - and plan their final day at the Barcelona show.

DataWind has been named as the UK’s Most Innovative Mobile Company, winning the Smart UK project competition at Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona.

The competition, which was run in association with UKTI, had attracted almost 80 entries. In today’s final judging, DataWind beat blippar, P2i and QRpedia to the prize.

India hopes that the launch of what is being called “the world’s cheapest tablet computer” will help tens of thousands of low-income students connect to the digital world.

The $45 device with a seven-inch color touchscreen, Wi-Fi connectivity, and two USB ports is meant to bridge the digital divide in a country where only three percent of the population has computers.

Recent figures released by ABI Research have prompted the market intelligence company to ask whether Google is losing control of the Android ecosystem.

At first glance, Android dominated smartphone shipments for the final quarter of 2013. ABI Research says 77% of the 287 million smartphones shipped in Q4 2013 were running Android.

After initially suffering from slow pick up by consumers, 4G has begun to accelerate, and is now well on the way to the forecasted one billion subscribers by 2017. In fact EE, owner of T-Mobile and Orange, recently announced the addition of 493,000 new 4G customers to its existing base of 1.2 million.

Great news for mobile phone users. Ofcom’s new rules preventing unexpected mid-contract price rises came into force last week, which means UK consumers can no longer be surprised by their subscription charge increasing while they’re still locked into a minimum-term deal.

This week, new Ofcom rules came into force. They’re designed to avoid unexpected price rises during the minimum term of a mobile phone contract. Yes, just because you signed a fixed-term contract doesn’t mean the charges can’t increase. Networks said they needed this option in case of inflation or regulatory changes. Customers felt trapped.
