A new hackathon says its focus on ‘solving real business challenges’ makes it different from most other hackathons.

It’s being run by London-based DevLab and will take place at Canary Wharf next month.

International hackathon startup competition AngelHack is running 30 events around the world this Spring, beginning with a London weekend at the end of April.

Around 200 developers are expected at each hack weekend, with the finalists entered entered into the three-month AngelHack Accelerator Program.

The fifth annual Over The Air event - a combination of 36-hour mobile hack day and conference - takes place at Bletchley Park on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd June.

This year’s event is also honouring the contributions of mathematician Alan Turing to the invention of the programmable computer, code-breaking at Bletchley Park during World War 2 and developments in other scientific fields.

Ah, the joys of multiplying by zero. I was reminded of my school maths lessons when I saw a news release from Orange UK this week.

Steve Wallage, Head of Sport Partnerships and Services for Orange UK was quoted as saying “Based on the surge in demand for mobile TV during the Ashes last summer, we expect viewing figures could rocket by at least 74% during the World Cup”.

I loved the film WarGames. I saw it in the cinema when it came out… and developed a minor crush on Ally Sheedy as a result. If you don’t remember the film – or haven’t seen it – the plot centres on a young computer hacker who almost starts World War III while playing an illicit online game of Global Thermonuclear War with a military computer.

It's not often that a news story about the Apple iPhone prompts me to remember a bible verse... but this week was an exception.
