Iain Graham, James Rosewell and Mark Bridge talk about the problems facing the introduction of mobile payment services - and Yossi Yarkoni of DigiMo introduces a new m-payment platform that requires no additional hardware at the Point of Sale.

In this week's podcast we cover Microsoft's purchase of Skype, Google's launch of Chromebooks and Nokia's name-changing at Ovi.

Almost everyone in the mobile telecoms industry seems to be looking for a perfect payment system that'll transform their mobile phone into some kind of electronic wallet. Yet despite many trial schemes – and a few commercial launches – cards and cash are still favoured by consumers and retailers in much of the world.

Mobile payment system provider DigiMo has announced a new platform that provides what it describes as "the first true mobile payment solution".

The service can be offered by online companies, credit card providers or mobile operators. Consumers would simply register for the service online, providing their mobile phone number and payment details. They'd then be given a PIN to use when paying at participating retailers.

Ah, the joys of multiplying by zero. I was reminded of my school maths lessons when I saw a news release from Orange UK this week.

Steve Wallage, Head of Sport Partnerships and Services for Orange UK was quoted as saying “Based on the surge in demand for mobile TV during the Ashes last summer, we expect viewing figures could rocket by at least 74% during the World Cup”.

I loved the film WarGames. I saw it in the cinema when it came out… and developed a minor crush on Ally Sheedy as a result. If you don’t remember the film – or haven’t seen it – the plot centres on a young computer hacker who almost starts World War III while playing an illicit online game of Global Thermonuclear War with a military computer.

It's not often that a news story about the Apple iPhone prompts me to remember a bible verse... but this week was an exception.

The story was in The Washington Post and it was headlined 'Apple's iPhone does well without being the best'. “Very true,” I thought, as I remembered something similar I'd written last summer.
