Doro announces a 'liberating' easy-to-use smartphone

Doro, the Swedish manufacturer best known for its easy-to-use mobile phones, has announced a new smartphone. The Doro Liberto 810, which is only the company’s second smartphone, runs Android 4.1 with the Doro Experience user interface.

There are three physical keys on the front for Menu, Home and Back functions. Usability is further enhanced by a touchscreen keyboard powered by SwiftKey. Users can choose from Doro’s curated selection of the best apps and the full range of applications from Google Play.

Dimensions are 126 x 66 x 12.5mm with an 800 x 480 pixel display; the weight is 132g. A 1500mAh battery offers a standby time of up to 340 hours and a maximum talk time of 11 hours.

Chris Millington, Managing Director of Doro UK and Ireland, said “The name Liberto was specifically chosen for our new smartphone as it sums up the essence of the device perfectly. In ancient Rome, servants and slaves of the empire could earn their full citizenship to become fully contributing members of society. Such people were known collectively as ‘the Liberto’. This new mobile helps people, who might be hesitant about using a smartphone, to fully embrace modern society. We are liberating those who perceive smartphones to be overly complicated and crowded with difficult-to-use apps. Our new mobile will bring them into a world of technology in a positive and engaged way.”

“We have fused deep consumer insight with the latest smartphone technology to create something so easy and effortless. We have made functions such as sharing photographs and sending emails easier. The combination of our easy-to-use philosophy and smartphone technology make this a truly unique product. It certainly offers much more to British consumers and network operators alike.”

Details of UK retailers will be released next month.

Doro’s first smartphone, the PhoneEasy 740, was previewed at Mobile World Congress 2012 and released later that year.

WiFi goes on the attack

Mark Bridge writes:

Mobile networks aren’t what they used to be. As last week’s interview with Vince Russell of The Cloud demonstrated, more and more customers are relying on WiFi to augment their mobile data service.

Truphone is now planning to do exactly the same with voice calls and text messages by linking its mobile network with WiFi for even wider coverage.

Goodbye RIM, hello BlackBerry

Mark Bridge writes:

Apple launches a new product and BlackBerry pushes it out of the headlines. Who’d have thought it, eh?

Yes, Apple’s new $799 128GB iPad didn’t get much of a mention in the mobile press last week - thanks to the new BlackBerry 10 platform and two new smartphones. Memories of Stephen Bates’s awkward BBC interviews were soon forgotten as the touchscreen Z10 appeared and quickly hit the shelves of UK retailers.

HTC smartphones are too good

HTC smartphones are too good

Causing HTC a serious headache

James Rosewell writes:

During December 2012 in the United States the HTC Evo 4G contributed 20% of web traffic from HTC devices. What is remarkable about this figure is that the HTC Evo 4G was first released in June 2010 and is almost three years old.

The HTC One series of devices were released during 2012 and contributed less than 10% of HTC’s web traffic in the same month.

Are HTC devices released pre-2012 too good at browsing the web?
