Google announces new devices

Pixel Watch, smartphones, earbuds and more

Google's 2022 I/O conference for developers has seen the company previewing new products, including its Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones and the first smartwatch entirely built by Google.

The Pixel Watch will have a round face, will run Wear OS with Google Assistant and will have a standalone LTE version. Pricing and availability were not mentioned.

Google also says more wearable devices powered by its Wear OS are expected later this year, manufactured by Samsung, Fossil Group and Montblanc.

In addition, its new Pixel Buds Pro offer Active Noise Cancellation and will soon support spatial audio when watching a compatible movie or TV show via a compatible device. US pricing will be $199 when pre-orders open in the summer.

Although the Pixel 7 smartphones aren't ready for release yet, there's a new Pixel 6a - with the same Google Tensor processor and hardware security architecture as the Pixel 6 - launching for in July at a lower price than its siblings.

A Google Pixel tablet is planned as well, with availability expected in early 2023.

Pedestrians may have been skating down pavements but a different kind of trouble on the high street dominated much of last week as music, DVD and occasional mobile phone retailer HMV went into administration.

"I am late middle-aged, not an idiot!"

Iain Graham writes:

“I am late middle-aged (ok I’m 62), not an idiot!”

This is a phrase I seem to be using more and more frequently, either out loud to bright young things or silently to myself in utter frustration of modern ‘must have’ gadgets.

Oh, how the mobile industry loves a superlative. Much like the work ethic celebrated by Daft Punk (or Kanye West, if you prefer), it’s always looking for a new angle.
