Iain, James and Mark begin this week's podcast with Apple's recent iOS 8 revelation and its plan to acquire Beats Electronics.

They then move on to discuss Samsung's Tizen-powered smartphone, a new flagship device from LG and the latest Microsoft Surface tablet - as well as a network takeover in Ireland, BlackBerry’s M2M moves and UK price changes for Vodafone.

After a few weeks of rumours, Apple has confirmed that it’s acquiring Beats Electronics - the audio company founded by Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre - along with the Beats Music streaming service.

The total deal is worth around $3 billion and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Last year HTC Corporation announced a partnership and investment deal with Beats Electronics, the company behind ‘Beats by Dr. Dre’ audio products.

It’s now selling some of its stake back to the founding members of Beats, which will give the founders around 75% ownership while HTC will be left with approximately 25%.

A suggestion that UK mobile phone networks might be forced to improve black-spot coverage by allowing interconnection with their rivals is back in the news. It made the headlines in June and has returned again this week, which is why I could be heard offering my opinion on BBC local radio yesterday morning.

If I'm interviewing someone for a podcast, I'll generally use my Zoom H4N recorder and a separate microphone or two. But I don't need the same level of high-quality kit if I'm interviewing someone for a written interview. Why carry an expensive recording device when your mobile phone can do the same job?

Contactless payments. They're catching on, aren't they?

But mobile contactless payments haven't proved so popular.
