Interbrand Best Global Brands report: Apple pushes Coca-Cola off the top spot

After 13 years at the top of Interbrand’s Best Global Brands report, Coca-Cola has been pushed off the top spot by two mobile-focussed companies. Apple has moved up the chart to number 1, with Google following in the number 2 position. Coca-Cola is now in third place.

Apple was ranked 36 in 2000, when the Interbrand Best Global Brands survey was first published. Then the brand was valued at $6.6 billion; today it’s increased almost 15-fold to $98.3 billion.  This year, the total value of all 100 Best Global Brands has been calculated at $1.5 trillion, which is an 8.4% increase from last year.

Jez Frampton, Interbrand’s Global Chief Executive Officer, said “Every so often, a company changes our lives - not just with its products, but with its ethos. This is why, following Coca-Cola’s 13-year run at the top of Best Global Brands, Apple now ranks #1. Tim Cook has assembled a solid leadership team and has kept Steve Jobs’ vision intact - a vision that has allowed Apple to deliver on its promise of innovation time and time again.”

Interbrand calculates brand value based on the financial performance of the branded products or service, the role the brand plays in influencing consumer choice and the strength the brand has to command a premium price or secure earnings for the company.

Seven of this year’s top 10 brands are from the tech sector:

  1. Apple
  2. Google
  3. Coca-Cola
  4. IBM
  5. Microsoft
  6. GE
  7. McDonald’s
  8. Samsung
  9. Intel
  10. Toyota

Hacking a smartphone by using differential power analysis

Mobile security always seems to be on the agenda – but one of the companies demonstrating its services at Mobile World Congress 2012 had a particularly stark warning.

Cryptography Research was demonstrating what’s called differential power analysis or side-channel analysis, which can be used to reveal encrypted information from a smartphone or tablet without ever needing to get hold of the device.

Windows 8 – 2012’s Biggest Mobile Milestone

James Rosewell writes:

Microsoft’s Windows 8 announcement today is as significant to the mobile industry as Apple’s iPad launch 2 years ago. Windows 8 will work on tablets, ultra books, desktops, laptops and 82” big screens. Not only that but it’ll support touch on all these devices.

“We're in a world where tablets are about touch, and PCs are about keyboard. We're changing those assumptions” Steven Sinofsky President, Windows and Windows Live Division says.
