Mobile phone usability and design: we talk to MobiWire and Doro at Mobile World Congress

Mark Bridge writes:

The mobile user interface seems to fall in and out of fashion. Nokia and Apple have both transformed the mobile UI in previous years… but still the challenge of creating the ‘perfect’ user interface design remains.

This focus on mobile usability is the main topic of today’s special podcast, which includes Chris Millington of Doro UK and Jérôme Nadel from MobiWire.

MobiWire, better known as mobile manufacturer Sagem Wireless until earlier this month, has a new direction as well as a new name. Jerome Nadel, who’s Executive Vice President of User Experience and Marketing at the company, discusses the company’s departure from mobile manufacturing and its move into ‘connected consumer electronics’. He goes on to explain how usability encourages usage (and therefore generates revenue) before describing MobiWire’s new ‘Surface’ Android user experience.

“The brilliance of Apple with ‘There’s an app for that’ is becoming passé because you don’t need to have all of these monolithic apps that you go to; the service that they provide should come to you”, he says.

In my conversation with Chris Millington, MD for Doro UK and Ireland, we talk about the features that make mobile phones better-suited to older customers.

“It’s not really about old people, it’s about providing solutions that they require as they age”, he says. “Design is something very important to this user group; they don’t want to be seen as special. They appreciate nice design.”

Beer o’clock

at Mobile World Congress 2014

James Rosewell writes:

I noticed a new phenomenon at Mobile World Congress this year: Beer O’Clock. Come 5pm Monday through Wednesday, companies with larger booths would break out the Cerveza, Vino, Cava and a small number of Orange juices. All very sociable and fun… until the music started.

IBM, smartphones and a graffiti wall: what's the real message?

Mark Bridge writes:

I was ready to poke fun at IBM for its sponsored graffiti wall at Mobile World Congress this year. Graffiti and IBM don't have a comfortable history, as anyone who remembers the Linux campaign from 2001 will tell you.

Vodafone’s admission last week that ‘some customers’ may have been experiencing issues with mobile services came three weeks late for me. I’ve been having my own ongoing battle with the network since the beginning of the month.
