Mobile research company On Device Research has released a report that looks at the number of web users who only access the internet through their mobile phones.
While around 25% of UK mobile internet users don’t ever use a PC for web access, that figure rises to 38% for Chinese mobile web users. In rural areas of China, the figure is even higher, with 45% of rural Chinese mobile web users admitting to being mobile only.
The figures in Nigeria and Kenya are higher still, with over half of mobile web users in these countries never going online via any other device.
Alistair Hill, CEO of On Device Research, said “The mobile revolution is bringing with it a new generation of mobile only internet users. The motivations for this vary, in developed markets it’s more for convenience, in developing economies it’s more likely they don’t have access to a computer. Mobile internet gives those in developing countries access to the world’s information, and in turn this opens up numerous opportunities, both for the consumer and for those who want to communicate effectively with this new audience.”
