Ofcom publishes its latest UK mobile phone complaints research

Most complaints received about T-Mobile, least complaints about O2

Ofcom has published its latest complaints data, revealing the major telecoms and pay TV providers that it receives the most complaints about. This report only includes complaints that have been made directly to Ofcom, so it differs from the recent customer service survey that contacted consumers and asked for their feedback.

The quarterly report, which covers July to September 2012, is the regulator’s seventh such publication. As with the previous report, complaints about mobile phone services are now being classified as ‘pay monthly’ and ‘pay as you go’ (pre-pay) customers - and the number of ‘pay as you go’ complaints is currently too low to be statistically valid.

Ofcom received the most ‘pay monthly’ mobile phone complaints from T-Mobile customers during the period - 0.17 complaints per 1,000 customers - while O2 was the least complained about mobile provider with 0.05 complaints per 1,000 customers. Overall, T-Mobile, Three UK, Orange and Vodafone all generated an above-average level of complaints.

TalkTalk generated the most landline complaints during the quarter, the most fixed-line broadband complaints came from Orange customers and Ofcom received the most pay TV complaints about BT Vision.

Love is in the air

Mark Bridge writes:

Mobile World Congress is just a week away, with lovers of mobile technology preparing to be wooed by manufacturers, networks and developers. But if MWC is like St Valentine’s Day, then LG has been behaving rather like the world’s worst boyfriend.

New deals and old problems

Mark Bridge writes:

There was Channel 4’s report about data on second-hand phones not being properly deleted before the handsets were re-sold, there was the latest round of the Smart UK Project and there was Tim Muffett’s story about the mobile-enabled high street on BBC Breakfast this morning.

Patently obvious

Mark Bridge writes:

Patents were a very popular topic of conversation last week. Google sold its Motorola Mobility smartphone business to Lenovo but hung on to most of the patents. Does this mean the patents were the most valuable part of the business? Well, when you look at the difference between the original purchase price and the sale price, it seems a reasonable conclusion.

A grumpy not-so-old man looks at his mobile phone bill

Mark Bridge writes:

Sometimes I worry that I’m turning into a grumpy old man. That I’ll follow the path of Rick Wakeman and become better known for my views on body piercing than for playing ‘The Six Wives of Henry VIII’ on eleven keyboards simultaneously.
