Orange makes the world's first international cross-network HD voice call

Orange, which was the world’s first mobile operator to launch HD voice calls, has made the first international end-to-end HD call between two mobile networks with different infrastructures. Customers using compatible phones on the Orange networks in Moldova and Romania can now enjoy HD voice quality when making calls between the two countries.

Paul-François Fournier, Executive VP of Orange’s Technocentre, said “Mobile HD voice offers noticeably better audio quality, and brings a real satisfaction to Orange clients. Almost 4 million customers have switched to HD voice in 14 countries, compared to 1 million customers a year ago. This is a true commercial success and demonstrates Orange’s commitment to give our customers the best mobile experience available.”

Orange launched its mobile HD voice service in 2009 and currently offers the technology in 14 countries, including the United Kingdom. The service uses the Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) speech codec, which offers a speech bandwidth that’s much wider than conventional mobile calls.
